About Good Roots Farm & Gardens

Welcome to Good Roots Farm and Gardens – our 40 acre family farm just a two minute drive from Brookings, SD. We raise delectable, non-pesticide veggies with organic practices. We're a learning farm committed to sustainability and green living.  We have six acres in Aronia berries, and a  beginning fruit orchard with dozens of trees.  We promote building healthy soil, healthy plants and healthy people!

OUR STORY

We’re Bill and Julie Ross, from the farm of Julie’s roots. Julie's grandparents, Amel and Alma Sundal, bought the farm in 1946 and her parents,  Ivan and Jane Sundal, took it over in 1964. All six of their kids were raised here on the farm. We are thrilled to own forty acres for your family to enjoy!

Bill was raised on a beautiful ranch in Wyoming. In his youth, he was known as the area “pumpkin farmer”.  We met at South Dakota State University and married in 1977 (farmers and ranchers should be friends, you know). Bill worked in ministry (and I in broadcasting) for many years in western South Dakota and then we served at an international training base in Colorado.  Pastoral care and training in Central Asia, Central America and Africa was our passion during those years. We continue to travel, just not quite as often. Our four sons and a precious daughter-in-law flow in and out of the action.
We realized all this beautiful land has a lot more to give….hence, Good Roots Farm and Gardens. We are excited to be developing the farm into a sustainable learning farm for local food production, your festive events, and  agri-tourism.
